Road Accident Crossroad

What to do first

  1. Pullover your vehicle and park in a distant, safe position off the road.
  2. Hazard lights and headlights should be turned on. This will signal other motorists that there has been an accident and slow down if necessary.
  3. Make sure not to turn on the bright lights. This may temporarily blind oncoming motorists.
  4. If the accident is on a blind rise or bend, park the vehicle in a fend-off position back from the accident. The upcoming vehicles must be able to spot the accident scene to prevent further accidents.
  5. Warning triangles at the accident must be placed.

Assisting the Injured

If you have a First Aid kit, take it out of your vehicle. Put on the rubber gloves that are inside the first aid kit. Try to calm down the people that have been involved in the accident. Make them aware you have called the emergency services and that help is on the way.

Safety measures and assistance of the accident victims

  • Safety – make sure you are not injured. To help others.
  • If there is any fire/ flames and you have a fire extinguisher, use it and direct the foam/ water at the base of the flames.
  • Do NOT move the patient or attempt to remove them from the vehicle UNLESS there is an immediate threat to life. There may be an underlying injury to the neck or spine and unnecessary movement could make this worse.
  • If the person is unconscious, open the mouth and check there is nothing inside causing the obstruction.
  • Make sure the person is breathing and leave them in the position you have found them. Monitor them regularly.
  • If the patient is NOT breathing, you may begin CPR.
  • If a person is bleeding heavily from a wound, take any available material e.g. a t-shirt/ gauze, and place it over the open bleeding wound. Make sure to press tightly applying direct pressure to the wound. Maintain that pressure until the emergency services arrive.
