The McKinsey 7S Model is a methodology for organizational’s effective management. The model is built upon seven internal factors of an organization that must be aligned and reinforced to drive growth and success. These factors assess the business’s hierarchical balance and prosperous future.

The 7s model is a mix of hard factors, mostly influenced by management, and the soft are more intangible elements, impacted by corporate culture.

The 3 hard factors are as follows:

  • Structure
  • Systems

The 4 soft factors are as follows:

  • Shared values
  • Skills
  • Style
  • Staff

The framework is used by organizations as a strategic planning tool to highlight how seemingly unrelated aspects of a company are, in fact, interrelated and dependent upon one another to achieve overall success.

McKinsey 7S Model in-depth

  • Strategy- is the plan deployed by an organization to remain competitive in its industry and market.
  • Structure- an organization’s corporate hierarchy, the chain of command, and how the operations function and interconnect.
  • Systems- company’s daily procedures, workflow, and decisions that make up the standard operations within.
  • Shared values- standards and norms within the company, workplace that both influence and temper the behavior of the entire staff and management.
  • Skills- capabilities of the organization’s stakeholders and management, which can determine the types of achievements and work the company can accomplish.
  • Style- the example and approach that management takes in leading the company, as well as how this influences performance, productivity, and corporate culture.
  • Staff- the personnel of the company, how large the workforce is, where their motivations reside, as well as how they are trained and prepared to accomplish the tasks set before them.

The McKinsey 7-S Model is applicable in a wide variety of situations where it's useful to understand how the various parts of an organization work together. It can be used as a tool to make decisions on future corporate strategies.
