Periodic Table of Elements

How can we define the Periodic Table of Elements?

It is a chart of the chemical elements that displays them in rows horizontally in order of increasing atomic number and vertically according to similarity of the chemical properties of their atoms.

Important facts:

  • The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of chemical elements that is arranged by increasing atomic number and groups elements according to recurring properties.
  • The seven rows of the periodic table are called periods. The rows are arranged so that metals are on the left side of the table and nonmetals are on the right side.
  • The columns are called groups. Groups contain elements with similar properties.

Purpose and Organization of the table

The purpose of the periodic table is to organize the similarities and properties of the elements in a way that can help us visualize and categorize the materials around us.

The organization of the periodic table can be used to derive relationships between the various element properties, and also to predict chemical properties and behaviors of undiscovered or newly synthesized elements.
