Ginger Grow Guide

Ginger is a powerful tropical vegetable that has a wealth of benefits. Its medicinal qualities are known to improve the immune system and relieve digestive problems. The best time to start growing ginger indoor is in the early spring. The root of the underground plant can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried, in oil, or added to a juice or smoothie.

How to grow a ginger plant?

  1. Start in the early spring- after the last spring frost.
  2. Choose your ginger plant- buy ginger root from the grocery store.
  3. Cut the rhizome into pieces- if you want to grow more than 1 plant, cut the ginger with shears or sanitized knife. Note that each piece of ginger requires 8 inches (20 cm) of space.
  4. Prepare the soil- mix garden soil with an equal amount of well-rotted compost, as it requires high-quality, well-draining soil.
  5. Choose a location- preferably partial shade or areas with morning sun only, away from large roots. The soil temperatures must be warm — ideally between 71 and 77ºF (22–25ºC).
  6. Plant the ginger- plant each piece of ginger 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) below loose soil, with the buds pointing upward.

Tips and tricks for beginners

  1. Keep the soil damp- water lightly right after planting.
  2. Watch for germination.
  3. Fertilize monthly- it is not required if the ginger is in rich soil, especially if you've mixed in compost.
  4. Let the soil dry as the stems die back.
  5. Let the plant mature before harvesting.
  6. Prepare for cold weather.
